1904 World's Fair Society

In April 1986, a handful of people got together to discuss the formation of a society dedicated to preserving the memory and memorabilia of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition - the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. On April 30th of that year, the 82nd anniversary of the opening day of the Fair, the first official membership meeting was held. Although starting small, membership has now grown to over 500. The Society represents a diverse group of people. Some collect memorabilia...some are interested in digging up the facts and setting the record straight...some are interested in finding the bits and pieces that still exist...and all find it exciting! The Society offers a number of activities and meets monthly in St. Louis.

American Federation of Mineralogical Societies

Rockhounds have a wide variety of interests. Rockhounding is one of the few endeavors that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. For a lot of people their rockhounding experience began as early as a child picking up rocks. Some people don't begin their rockhounding hobby until after they retire from their job. Some of the types interests among members include: geology, minerals, crystals, gems, fossils, meteorites, lapidary, faceting, jewelry, wirewrapping, or simply studying all of the above. Organized groups started as early as the 1880s with the New York Mineralogical Society in 1886 and the Philadelphia Mineralogical Society in 1892. By the 1930s there were some regional federations of mineral collecting societies. In 1947 the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies was formed. Today, AFMS is composed of seven regional federations representing a combined total of over 250 mineralogical societies.
